How to Video: Making Brownies

Shooting video is far from my expertise; but being pushed out of your comfort zone and trying new things is always good. This assignment has tested my abilities and has taught me that I am able to do more than what I once thought I was able to. I now feel a little more confident when it comes to shooting and editing videos, but there is definitely still practice that needs to be done.

I came up with the idea of filming a how to make brownies video because quite frankly, I wasn’t quite sure what kind of video theme I wanted to film. I decided on the process of making brownies out of the box because it is something my sister, Kelsey Winter, loves doing, and does often at home. Since she is always making brownies, I figured I’d film her baking them, because who doesn’t love brownies anyways? Even the process of making brownies is simple and includes the directions on the back of the box, it can be fun to follow baking instructions through video instead of just reading the box.

The process of making this video was a challenge. Since we’ve been in quarantine, my sister and I have been working at our grandmother’s daycare. Her and I work opposite days so it was a struggle trying to find the right time/day to film when we were both not at work and when there was at least some decent sun lighting out. The process of this video included setting up all of the ingredients and other materials that were needed to bake the brownies, and trying to find different angles to shoot at, while also trying to keep the best light possible.

I hope you all enjoy my first ever how-to video of my sister, Kelsey Winter, making brownies. I have to end this blog post, as well as my last assignment by stating that I am overall very proud of myself for getting this video done and how it turned out; especially with having no previous knowledge of filming and editing video before.

Enjoy!

Filming video is a whole new experience for me. Diving into something new can be a little nerve-racking, but exciting at the same time. For me, learning about different filming angles, the names of them, and putting them all together into one video was a challenge. This was my first time filming anything like this; so, here is what I put together based off of what I learned shooting off of my IPhone.

“Every secret of a writer’s soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind, is written large in his works.” -Virginia Woolf

Writing has always been something that I have had a passion for. It has helped me throughout hard times by letting me write down and express how I feel and has given me a way to remember parts of my life that have later become stories to look back on.

I am a junior at Central Michigan University, majoring in journalism and minoring in business administration. I am a writer for Grand Central Magazine, since the fall of 2018 through now. Writing for Grand Central Magazine has allowed me to have a true experience for writing on a public platform.

My favorite kind of writing is free writing and creative. I also enjoy reading those types of works, as well as mysteries, and romances. I first fell in love with writing when I was in middle school after my parents divorce, as I used writing as a coping method. Since then, I have grown to love it more, and could not imagine having a career where I don’t write full-time.

Since I have such a love for writing, this is my third blog. I have one personal blog, as well as a class photography blog from my basic photography class last semester. This third blog is going to be designed for my introduction to digital journalism class. I am excited for this blog the most because I am learning more about digital journalism and posting more interesting stories, rather than news stories, which is exactly what I want to do in my future.

Down the road, I have goals to either be a crime journalist, or write for a lifestyle magazine. Besides that, I plan to write a book or two, as that has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl.
